The authors of Ghost of Yotei introduced not only combat mechanics in the game, but also various activities. The main character can pet local foxes, but you shouldn't "repeat this at home."
Locals in Hokkaido (Japan) drew attention to this mechanic in Ghost of Yotei and warned of potential danger:
«Although [a fox] may seem like a cute and friendly animal, visitors to Hokkaido are advised to maintain a safe distance and under no circumstances touch it. This is because the red fox carries a parasite — a tapeworm known as Echinococcus — which can infect humans and cause echinococcosis, which, if left untreated, can lead to death».
However, the heroine of Ghost of Yotei is safe — at the time the game takes place, there was no such disease (parasite) in Hokkaido.
