ASUS previously released a "gold" version of the RTX 5090 with 6.5 grams of gold for $10,000, but this seemed insufficient for wealthy connoisseurs.
The ROG Astral RTX 5090 Dhahab Edition video card was first presented at Bilibili World 2025, held in Shanghai.
Now, Tony Yu from ASUS has published a video about the creation of this most expensive video card in history. The project was a collaboration between ASUS and Chinese content creator and private investor Magic Bear, who provided the gold. The video card is a custom modification of the existing RTX 5090 model with a completely redesigned exterior.
The gold casting process took several months and more than ten failed attempts. Each element, including the shroud, backplate, and frame, was cast, molded, and polished by hand. The finished card weighs 7.56 kg, and about 5 kg of gold was used in its manufacture.
Initially, the video card was planned to be auctioned off, but before it started, the device was acquired by a private collector for $500,000. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Bilibili Charity organization, which supports the education of children in rural areas.
Unlike the previous "gold" version for $10,000, which used 6.5 grams of gold, the pure gold model will remain a unique item.
