The creators of the shooter Metal: Hellsinger will be laid off, and The Outsiders studio will be closed. The company's founder, David Goldfarb, announced the unpleasant consequences of the restructuring initiated by Funcom.
In early October, Funcom, responsible for Dune: Awakening, confirmed the launch of a restructuring process. The exact names of those being laid off were not mentioned at the time, but it became known that employees of The Outsiders, which had existed for 10 years, were affected by the reduction.
David Goldfarb spoke about the liquidation of the studio in an emotional post on Bluesky:
"I've had little time to process the news, but everyone at The Outsiders and Funcom Stockholm has felt the effects of the cuts. Our ten-year-old studio will close."
He also recalled past difficulties when the studio was threatened with closure.
"Many of us have experienced moments when Darkborn was canceled, but thanks to the team's dedication and refusal to give up, Metal: Hellsinger was born. For me, this will always be an important moment, and I am grateful for the opportunity to create this game and work with such a team."
Goldfarb added that the team was planning to make "something better" than the shooter, but this is now impossible within Funcom. He hopes to continue working in a "new format" and urged anyone who wants to help in any way. "Changes are always difficult, so we are all suffering now," the founder concluded.
The Outsiders had been part of Funcom as a Swedish branch since June 2021, had about 50 employees, and released only Metal: Hellsinger (Steam — 95% positive reviews out of more than 16 thousand opinions).
