Capcom hasn't forgotten about Street Fighter 6, which has become one of the most popular fighting games in recent years. The company has announced an unusual initiative: the Capcom Cup 12 finals and the SFL World Championship will be broadcast on a "pay-per-view" system.

As announced at Tokyo Game Show 2025, an online broadcast of one tournament will cost 4000 yen (~$27), and a package for both events will cost 6000 yen (~$40). For comparison, this is more expensive than a monthly subscription to popular streaming services — and for just one weekend of competition.

The idea sparked a wave of criticism. Fans openly ridiculed the paid viewing, which forced Capcom to react. An official statement appeared on the Capcom Fighters account: the company is "reviewing the details and price list" and "considering changes after numerous player feedback." The Japanese eSports division added that the negative reactions were the reason for reconsidering the decision, and updated details will be published at the end of October.

Capcom's decision resembles the FAME MMA and KSW model, where viewers pay for sports shows. But the difference is that esports fighting games do not yet attract such an audience, and introducing a fee for digital fights could backfire on the company. Players believe that instead of promoting tournaments, Capcom is trying to profit from loyal fans.
