Ncuti Gatwa's tenure as the Fifteenth Doctor was shorter than his predecessors, sparking rumors about the end of the iconic sci-fi show.
Ncuti Gatwa officially debuted as the Fifteenth Doctor in the special episode "The Church on Ruby Road" in December 2023. In May 2024, the first full season with his participation started. A year later, the actor left the project after the final episode "The Reality War," which fueled rumors about the show's cancellation.
Recently, former Doctor Who writer Robert Shearman criticized the series' "retrogressive" mood and stated that the project is now "deader than ever." These words added fuel to the fire of fan discussions.
Executive producer Jane Tranter responded to Shearman's statements, emphasizing that such statements are "very rude" and "completely untrue."
"The partnership between BBC Studios and Disney+ is still in effect. A total of 26 episodes are planned, of which 21 have already been released. There are still five episodes of the spin-off 'The War Between Land and Sea' ahead. After that, we will all together make a decision about the future of 'Doctor Who'."
She also reminded that the franchise has been around for over 60 years, and twenty years have passed since the series returned in 2005. According to her, it is natural for "Doctor Who" to change and look for new forms.
"The only thing you can be sure of is that the Doctor will definitely return. We can only wait patiently for when this happens."
