"<<BLEEP> as good as it gets": Game Director of Europa Universalis 5 Praises Paradox's DLC Sales Model

The Game Director of Europa Universalis 5 spoke with PC Gamer. Fans of the franchise have actively criticized UE4 for the low quality of DLC content, but Johan Andersson believes that the problem is not with Paradox's strategy regarding DLCs — it's " as good as it gets" (very, very good).

During the conversation with the journalist, he explained that the DLC sales model has become a logistical and financial advantage:

We have several working pipelines for games that keep them viable, so I would say that [development through DLC] is a very excellent system, at least in terms of success.

Andersson explained that the add-on model is convenient for reasons unrelated to business and growth:

This system means that you, as a game director responsible for your project, can fully control the release time. You decide what will be released, determine the scope, decide when to release it and what exactly should be released. Therefore, it is up to you, as a game director, to release a good product, using your team to achieve success.

The developers didn't get everything right away:

Many early additions were like trying to find your way. Conquest of Paradise was the first big job. Like, something like: "Okay, what are we going to do? Let's create a random map for the New World. It kind of worked."

After that, according to Andersson, the developers became more receptive to feedback (but this did not always lead to ideal results).

The Game Director of Europa Universalis 5 hopes that the Paradox model will continue to bear fruit with the new game:

I think EU5 can become a good long-term platform. There are many countries in the world, a rich history, around which we can create content to provide a supporting structure for many years.
