Sony is not going to fight for the key franchises of Warner Bros. Discovery. The corporation has officially announced that it does not plan to buy the Batman, Mortal Kombat, and Harry Potter brands.
Warner Bros. Discovery is up for sale and has begun considering "strategic options." The first offers have already been received. The company owns the brands "Game of Thrones", Batman, Mortal Kombat, and Harry Potter. But not all industry players are ready to participate in a deal of this magnitude.
According to the Japanese publication Nikkei, Sony has withdrawn from negotiations and is not interested in buying Warner Bros. Discovery.
The head of the company, Hiroki Totoki, confirmed this, stating:
"We do not want major deals and mergers in the film industry right now. Our goal is to strengthen our position in key areas: anime and video games."
Totoki noted that the company is betting on markets with growth potential, rather than aggressive acquisitions. In his opinion, the anime industry has the greatest prospects, which will grow at double-digit rates.
Previously, rumors attributed to Sony the desire to acquire the gaming segment of Warner Bros. and obtain the rights to Mortal Kombat, the Batman: Arkham series, and Hogwarts Legacy, but the company's current position puts an end to speculation.
