Square Enix has proven that it knows how to bring back classic adventures. In 2025, the publisher celebrates another success — Dragon Quest 1&2 HD-2D Remake has received excellent reviews.

The game received an average rating of 85% after 54 reviews, and some publications gave it 10/10, calling the remake one of the best returns in the series' history. Dragon Quest 1&2 HD-2D Remake combines the spirit of the originals with modern graphics and minor changes to the mechanics, making the process fresh and engaging.

Journalists particularly note: the beautiful HD-2D aesthetic, creating a fabulous atmosphere and reviving the classic JRPG; the music, the atmosphere of adventure, and the simplicity of the narrative, which remains relevant decades later; simple and enjoyable battles with a slightly altered difficulty balance, making the game accessible but challenging.

There is also criticism: sometimes the game follows the original too strictly, which can make the plot seem outdated; the lack of modern features, such as autosave or an expanded quest log; the second part does not always use the full potential of HD-2D and in some places is inferior to the first chapter.

Despite the comments, Dragon Quest 1&2 HD-2D Remake is a bright success for Square Enix. HD-2D remakes remain the gold standard for the return of Japanese RPGs, combining respect for the past and charm for modern players.
