Despite the uncertainty with the main show, Doctor Who fans will not be left without content for the New Year.
The BBC has confirmed that the long-awaited spin-off of the Doctor Who universe, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will be released in December 2025.
The story tells how humanity, including UNIT, faces an ancient species of Sea Devils that have risen from the ocean. These creatures first appeared in the classic Doctor Who in 1972 and returned half a century later in the special episode The Legend of the Sea Devils (2022) with Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor.
The cast includes Russell Tovey (Barnkley) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Salt), as well as Gemma Redgrave (Kate Stewart), Ruth Madeley (Shirley Bingham) and Alexander Devrient (Christopher Ibrahim) from the main series.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies, who is the author and executive producer of the project, called The War Between the Land and the Sea "a huge, spectacular Christmas gift" - with heroes, monsters, battles and romance on the verge of disaster.
The exact premiere date has not yet been revealed, but his words set the tone for the future show and make it clear that the spin-off may become a kind of Christmas episode, only on a much larger scale.
