Patent Result, an agency specializing in patent analysis in Japan, has published a ranking of Japanese companies in the field of games and entertainment. The assessment is based on the number and relevance of registered and active patents for the fiscal year from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. Bandai became the leader, followed by Sony Interactive Entertainment and mobile game developer Gree.
Unlike a simple count of patents, the Patent Result ranking takes into account their significance using its own "Patent Score" system. This indicator is calculated based on the frequency of references to the patent as a basis for rejecting competitors' applications, as well as attempts by other companies to restrict the applicant.
Bandai's main patents are related to its toy manufacturing business. Among the key applications of other Patent Result leaders, it highlights Sony's patents for a "display system capable of generating virtual objects appearing in real time on a device" and a "device that automatically recommends sound effects for videos or computer simulations based on specific characteristics."
Last year, the top 3 were also occupied by Bandai, SIE, and Gree, but then SIE and Gree were ahead of Bandai.
Notably, Nintendo, which is constantly worried about its intellectual property and tirelessly tries to register new patents, didn't even make it into the top three.
