Shawn Levy's upcoming film will be a standalone work in the "Star Wars" universe.
Director Shawn Levy talked about how work is progressing on his first film in the "Star Wars" universe. In The Business podcast, he admitted that, contrary to expectations, he did not encounter the traditional set of restrictions and rigid "internal canon" for the franchise.
According to Levy, Lucasfilm gave him only one guideline: to do something new.
"There is no guidance or interference, except for the constant reminder: \"Do something new.\" Every time I asked if I could use a character that had already appeared in the saga, I heard the same thing: \"People have already seen that. Come up with something else.\""
This approach became a rare case of almost complete creative freedom for him within a major Hollywood franchise. Levy is writing the script together with Jonathan Tropper, and the film will tell about the adventures of original heroes in an unexplored part of the galaxy.
The main roles are played by Ryan Gosling and young actor Flynn Gray. The film also stars Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamel Westman, Daniel Ings and Amy Adams.
The premiere of the film is scheduled for May 28, 2027.
