Microsoft summarized 2025 and presented a roadmap for the development of the Age series for the first half of 2026.
The past year has been the most eventful in the history of the Age franchise. The company released six add-ons for three games and brought the series to new platforms, thanks to which the total number of players in all projects exceeded 70 million worldwide. A message from the developers and a preliminary development plan for Age of Empires and Age of Mythology for the first half of 2026 appeared on the official Age of Empires website.
The first major release will be Age of Mythology: Retold — Expansion Pass, which includes four mythical add-ons. The main one, Obsidian Mirror: Rise of the Aztec Gods, will add the Aztec pantheon led by Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl. Players will find a full-fledged 12-mission campaign, new units, deities and a civilization inspired by the culture of Central America. The package will also include "Gods: Demeter", cosmetic sets and Blood & Bones and Ultimate Fan effects. Pre-order for the Expansion Pass will open on December 18.
In February 2026, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will receive an update. The Last Chieftains add-on will take players to medieval South America and introduce three new civilizations — Mapuche, Muisca and Tupi, each with its own unique units, technologies and architecture. Three campaigns will tell the stories of the heroes Lautaro, Pacanchica and Arariboi, combining elements of folklore and real history of the region. Pre-order starts in January 2026.
The developers of Age of Empires IV are preparing two new expansions. In the spring, a campaign dedicated to the history of China will be released, and in the second half of the year — a content add-on with two basic civilizations, including the long-awaited Vikings, and new content for The Crucible mode.
Finally, in early 2026, Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition will be released — a PC port of the mobile adaptation of the series. The game will be released on Steam and Microsoft Store, will receive 4K graphics, keyboard and mouse support, as well as crossplay and progress synchronization with mobile devices.
