James Gunn aims to break the stereotype of ideal female superheroes.

The Supergirl film in the new DC cinematic universe is initially conceived as a project that breaks away from the usual superhero genre. Instead of a classic origin story, viewers will be presented with a portrait of a heroine who is far from ideal and does not aspire to be so at all.

During a recent press event, actress Milly Alcock, DC Studios head James Gunn, and director Craig Gillespie shared their vision of Kara Zor-El. According to them, the key to the new Supergirl lies in her imperfections and internal contradictions.

«I think that Supergirl shows young women that it's okay to be imperfect. You don't have to be perfect to achieve inner balance. We often hear that a woman should be flawless, but Kara is a heroine who accepts her flaws. And that's what makes her special».

James Gunn elaborated on this idea, clarifying that this particular interpretation of the character struck him in Tom King's graphic novel "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," which served as the basis for the film. According to Gunn, female superheroes in movies are too often portrayed as perfect, whereas the most charismatic male heroes — like Tony Stark or Star-Lord — are frankly chaotic, emotionally unstable, and far from role models.

The plot follows Kara Zor-El as she embarks on a journey through the galaxy, driven by a thirst for revenge rather than a desire to save the world. She reluctantly follows her path, gradually facing the need to take on the role of a heroine.

Director Craig Gillespie emphasized that it is this unwillingness that makes Supergirl an interesting character. Kara finds herself drawn into the world of superheroism against her will, and watching her cope with the pressure and try to understand herself is more important than the end result. According to Gillespie, the story will intentionally remain "unfinished," and he sees its strength in this.

The premiere of "Supergirl" in theaters will take place on June 26, 2026.
