Activision may have a new reason to worry.
Haotang Technology and publisher 4Divinity have released the first full gameplay trailer for The Defiant, a first-person military shooter set on the Eastern Front during World War II.
The trailer, which is just over six minutes long, shows fragments of the single-player campaign: resistance fighters battling Japanese invaders in snowy forests, on mountain roads, and in ruined villages behind the front lines. The developers describe the project as "a cinematic but truthful tale of sacrifice and courage in times of war."
The authors emphasize historical accuracy. The Defiant features real weapons, including the Hanyang rifle, the Mauser pistol, the MP18 machine gun, and other weapons familiar from Chinese military history of the first half of the 20th century. According to the developers, all weapons were recreated from scratch based on museum exhibits and archival drawings.
The Defiant does not yet have an announced release date or a list of target platforms. Nevertheless, the game is already being called a potential "Call of Duty killer" and is being compared in atmosphere to the Medal of Honor series.
