Some viewers have already had the chance to evaluate the new film by Christophe Gans.
The first reactions to the film "Return to Silent Hill" — a new adaptation of Silent Hill 2 directed by Christophe Gans — have appeared on the Letterboxd platform.
Italian film critic Roberto Giacomelli from DarkSideCinema rated the film 3 out of 5 and noted that Gans "failed to replicate the magic" of the original 2006 film, but nevertheless created a "decent and atmospheric work." The main criticism is excessive loyalty to the source material.
According to the reviewer, the story of Silent Hill 2 is too multilayered and profound for a feature film format, making it difficult for viewers unfamiliar with the game to understand what is happening. In particular, several secondary characters and their backstories are given too little attention.
Other reviews call the picture "at times tedious, at times mesmerizing," while emphasizing that the film accurately conveys the spirit of the game. Some critics also note that the new version turned out to be at least more convincing than the 2006 adaptation that Gans worked on previously.
The world premiere of "Return to Silent Hill" is scheduled for January 23, 2026. In Russia, the film will be released officially — the theatrical run starts a day earlier, on January 22.
