Recently, Valve changed the Steam rules. Developers are prompted to fill out an updated disclosure form regarding the use of artificial intelligence.
The company clarified that "AI-powered tools" (such as code writing assistants) do not need to be disclosed: "Improving efficiency through [AI development tools] is not the focus of this section of the rules."
Developers are still required to disclose two uses of AI:
- "AI for generating content for the game" — whether it's content for the game itself, the store page, or marketing materials (a free-form text field allows developers to describe this in any way).
- "Content generated by AI during gameplay" — a simple "checkbox" to mark whether the game uses AI-generated "images, audio, text, and other content."
Thus, Valve suggests that developers disclose information that ordinary players would like to receive (about what is made directly in the game using AI).
Judging by the comments, the professional developer community appreciated Valve's decision: "The way they separated tools for improving work efficiency and actual content creation shows that they understand how teams actually work."
