Square Enix released Final Fantasy VII Remake on Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2 last week. Despite very positive initial reviews of the version for Nintendo's new console, a detailed technical analysis from Digital Foundry showed that the Xbox Series S version turned out to be the most impressive.

According to Digital Foundry, the Switch 2 version uses a mixed set of assets from the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions. At the same time, the Xbox Series S utilizes full high-quality assets similar to those used on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Experts believe this was achieved through efficient texture streaming, which relies on the Series S's sufficiently powerful processor — a custom 8-core AMD Zen 2, almost identical to the CPU of Microsoft's flagship console. The Nintendo Switch 2 processor, the ARM Cortex-A78C, is significantly weaker, and even NVIDIA DLSS support at the graphics core level could not compensate for the difference in this case.

At the same time, graphical settings on the Xbox Series S are still simplified: shadow quality and some other parameters are at a level between the PS4 and PS5 versions. However, in terms of performance modes, players have a choice — 1080p at 60 frames per second or 1440p at 30 fps. For comparison, the Xbox Series X, like the PS5, offers 1512p at 60 fps in performance mode and native 4K at 30 fps in quality mode.
