The Wildlight Entertainment team admitted that it did not expect a wave of criticism after Highguard's surprise announcement at The Game Awards, but is confident that the shooter will be able to find its audience thanks to its unique idea.
Creative director and design director Jason McCord said that the developers had discussed the possibility of a surprise release, like Apex Legends, but for a new studio without a name, that is unrealistic:
The problem is that no one knows who we are.
The main thing for us as a live-service game is that people notice it at all.
McCord emphasized that Highguard was not conceived as a traditional hero shooter; heroes appeared later to improve the gameplay.
Lead designer Carlos Pineda noted that the failures of competitors only strengthened the team's confidence:
We have a game that does not exist anywhere else. We are sure of that.
Highguard is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game is free-to-play.
