It seems Samus Aran is indeed preparing to make it to the big screen.
Insider DanielRPK reported that the Metroid film adaptation has entered active development. This indirectly confirms last year’s rumors that Universal Pictures is negotiating with Nintendo over the film rights and is considering Metroid as part of the emerging "Mario cinematic universe."
Attempts to bring Samus Aran’s story to the screen had been made before. In the early 2000s, the project was in development at Lion Rock Productions under the leadership of John Woo. At the time, a film about Samus’s first missions and her confrontation with Mother Brain was planned, but Nintendo refused to hand over control over shaping the heroine’s backstory — as a result, the project was shut down.
Now, after nearly two decades, the adaptation has been given a chance at a new life. There are still no details about the script, director, or cast. Over the years, Ronda Rousey and Brie Larson have publicly expressed a desire to play Samus Aran, while directors Jordan Vogt-Roberts and Neill Blomkamp wanted to take on the project as filmmakers.
At the same time, Larson is already involved in the project "Super Mario: Galactic Movie," where she voices Rosalina, so the actress already has a certain working relationship with Nintendo and Universal.
