As it turned out, Reign of the Warlock may only be the beginning. The introduction of the first new class in the history of Diablo II in a quarter of a century is largely a "test" of interest. If the Warlock is liked by the community, the studio will get the "green light" to develop the classic in the style of a "modern" game – with updates and large content packs.
The developers emphasize that this is a "difficult dance" – to preserve the spirit of the 1999 version and at the same time add something new without destroying the foundations. Producer Matthew Cederquist recalled that millions still play Diablo 2, and the 30th anniversary of the brand was an opportunity to "surprise and delight."
Blizzard compared the approach to the "Mona Lisa": they don't want to "spoil the Mona Lisa" – no sunglasses or a new hairstyle. Warlock should look like a class from 1999. At the same time, his versions in Diablo 2, Diablo Immortal and Diablo IV will differ, but the plot will unite them into one story of the character's appearance in Sanctuary.
If the reception is positive, more serious changes are possible, but already "hand in hand" with the community. At the same time, Diablo II: Resurrected will remain a "frozen" classic, and Reign of the Warlock will become a "progressive" space for new ideas.
