TheOneRing, citing Spy Report and Knight Edge Media, has published an extended synopsis of "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," revealing details of the upcoming prequel.
«Before the Fellowship, one creature's obsession becomes the key to saving Middle-earth – or dooming it. In "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," viewers meet a young Smeagol – an outcast drawn to trinkets and petty mischief – long before the One Ring consumes him and sets him on the path to a tragic transformation into the tormented, deceitful creature known as Gollum.
When the Ring is lost and taken by Bilbo Baggins, Gollum finds himself forced to leave his cave and embark on a quest to find it. Gandalf the Grey calls upon Aragorn, still known as the ranger Strider, to track down the elusive creature whose knowledge of the Ring's whereabouts could tip the scales in favor of the Dark Lord Sauron.
Set during the dark period between Bilbo's disappearance on his birthday and the formation of the Fellowship, this perilous journey through the darkest corners of Middle-earth reveals previously unknown truths, tests the resolve of the future king, and explores the fractured soul and backstory of Gollum – one of Tolkien's most enigmatic characters.»
Andy Serkis is directing the film and will reprise his role as Gollum. Peter Jackson is producing the project, and Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who worked on the original trilogy, wrote the screenplay.
Ian McKellen's return as Gandalf has been confirmed. Casting is also underway for a younger version of Aragorn. McKellen mentioned that a character named Frodo will appear in the film, but there has been no official confirmation of Elijah Wood's return yet.
Filming for "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" will begin in New Zealand in July 2026. The premiere is scheduled for December 17, 2027, in foreign distribution.
