Kaiju from the Godzilla universe will drop into the world of the speedy hedgehog Sonic, as publisher IDW is working on the comic Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla. Fans of both series can already check out seven cover variants for the first issue.
Thanks to IGN, it became known that Nick Marino, the author of the Godzilla Rivals series, will team up with artist Jack Lawrence and colorist Reggie Graham to create an exclusive comic book series in which Sonic and Godzilla will face each other head-on.
Publisher IDW, which holds the comic book licenses for Sonic and Godzilla, decided that the time had come to unite these universes. According to Marino, this crossover became one of the most anticipated among fans of both franchises.
Unlike the crossover with DC, where the action unfolds across several worlds, in Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla, kaiju from the Godzilla universe will rampage specifically in Sonic's world, and the battles will take place in locations familiar to fans of the series.
Marino draws inspiration from various sources — in particular, from Station Square (a location from Sonic Adventure), as well as from such films as "Godzilla, Mothra and Mechagodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.", "Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack", and "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla".
Along with the announcement, IDW presented seven cover variants for the debut issue, created by artists such as Jack Lawrence, Mauro Fonseca, Min Ho Kim, Clayton Crain, Mico Suayan, Natalie Haines, Reggie Graham and Miles Arq.
Most of them depict Godzilla, Mothra, and Mechagodzilla as the main monsters, as well as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Doctor Eggman. The first issue of Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla will be released in the summer of 2026.
