Former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has made a sharp appeal to players who criticize new game announcements, even if they are not going to play them themselves. The developer stated that such reactions only force studios to ignore such comments.

Last week, Kaplan presented The Legend of California, a new open-world online shooter set in an alternate version of California during the Gold Rush. This is the first game from his new studio, Kintsugiyama.

After the announcement, the developer held an almost ten-hour stream on Twitch with studio head and co-founder Tim Ford. During the stream, Kaplan talked about the development of the project, the team, and the state of the gaming industry in general.

Towards the ninth hour of the broadcast, he touched on the topic of negative reactions to the game's announcement. According to Kaplan, some Overwatch fans expressed dissatisfaction that his new project turned out to be completely different.

As a game developer, you can't make a game that everyone will like. Some people just won't be interested in it.

According to Kaplan, the community's reaction was divided: some players supported the new idea, while others said they didn't want to play such a project.

The developer advised such users to simply ignore the game if they are not interested in it.

There are people who say, "I like this game and I want to play it," and there are those who say, "I don't want to play it," and I say to them, "Well, don't play it then, it's okay." No one is forcing them with a gun to their head, are they?

At the same time, Kaplan emphasized that he understands the dissatisfaction of players when changes occur in a game they are already playing — for example, if their favorite character class is weakened. However, in his opinion, it is pointless to criticize a project that a person is not even going to play.

I understand the desire to speak out, but I never understood all this anger and hostility. If a game comes out that you weren't going to play anyway, just shut the f*** up. No one cares about your opinion.

Kaplan also admitted that such an aggressive reaction is most often simply ignored by developers. According to him, many studios discuss among themselves forums and communities that turn into "breeding grounds for outrage" and prefer not to pay attention to them.
