Digital Foundry Criticized the PS5 Version of Starfield

Digital Foundry experts tested the PS5 and PS5 Pro versions of Starfield. Despite the "NASA-punk" atmosphere and large-scale research component, the technical condition of the port raised questions.

Although almost 3 years have passed since the release on Xbox, the PlayStation version faces stability issues that were not present at the start of the original.

On the base PS5, the situation is close to the Xbox Series X, but with a slight advantage for the Microsoft console. In performance mode, both run at 1080p, but Xbox maintains approximately 5 FPS better in demanding locations like New Atlantis, where the PS5 drops to ~30 FPS. Quality mode on PS5 provides 1440p and stable 30 FPS, with improved draw distance and shadows.

Up to 24 setting combinations are available on PS5 Pro. The console maintains 60 FPS better and outperforms Xbox by approximately 10 frames, but at the cost of reducing the internal resolution to 900p.

PSSR technology in the current version produces noise and artifacts. The second version improves sharpness but adds new visual errors, especially in vegetation.

The main problem is frequent crashes. Digital Foundry reports regular freezes on both PS5 versions, requiring a hard reboot. Incorrect HDR (actually SDR) and non-functional settings, including v-sync, were also noted.
