The card "roguelike" Slay the Spire 2, which was released in early access in March, has quietly established itself among the most popular games on Steam. Despite the early access, the project already surpasses the original in terms of both content and the number of players — however, the development is far from complete.
Mega Crit Studio has shared its plans for the upcoming update. The game will add alternative versions of acts 2 and 3 (the first act already has two variations — Overgrowth and Underdocks), Steam Workshop support, "experimental modes", a new character, as well as fresh cards, events, relics and potions. In the future, the developers promise a "true ending" with additional content.
In addition, the team continues to work on fixing bugs, improving audio and visuals, balancing and localizations. At the same time, there are no specific deadlines for the release of updates — and, according to studio co-founder Casey Yano, this is a conscious decision.
We set tasks for ourselves on a weekly basis, depending on current priorities. I know, not the most punctual approach, but it also gives us the opportunity to experiment, to try something new. For example, the dialogue system with the Ancients and the cheese room appeared. We are not going to expand the staff just to speed up the development. Deadlines for the sake of deadlines only lead to a raw and soulless result, and we do not want to make "kill the spire two". We want Slay the Spire 2.
Yano noted that a small team prefers a flexible approach to development, focusing on quality and experiments, rather than strict deadlines. According to him, strict deadlines often lead to a "raw and soulless result", which the developers want to avoid.
