Traditional Method: Subnautica 2 Developers Assured That No Generative AI Was Used in Game Development
Although Krafton previously proudly stated its commitment to transfer most of its workflows under AI control.
Unknown Worlds Creative Media Producer Scott McDonald stated that Subnautica 2 is being created entirely "the traditional way". According to him, the project includes standard in-game AI systems, but generative AI is not used at all.
It's interesting technology, but we don't use it – everything is done by hand.
Despite Krafton actively promoting a strategy of widespread AI implementation and providing developers with access to various AI tools, in the case of Subnautica 2, their use remains purely voluntary. The Unknown Worlds Entertainment team decided to forgo these capabilities, believing that they do not fit either the current workflow or the creative goals of the project.
Lead Designer Anthony Gallegos emphasized that the introduction of generative AI could disrupt the already established development process. In his opinion, the forced use of such technologies would only harm the creation of the game. In addition, the developers also took into account the negative reaction of the audience: the project had previously faced criticism and suspicions of AI use, even without real evidence.
