Modder redesigned Need for Speed: Carbon into a rhythm game

An enthusiast decided to present a different type of gameplay for NFS: Carbon.

In 2026, some players continue to remember Need for Speed: Carbon. Various mods are released for the arcade racer, which not only improve graphics but sometimes transform the gameplay.

Modder giovannosaur took a radical step — he redesigned NFS: Carbon into a rhythm game. When switching modes, the gameplay begins to resemble a lowrider mini-game from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: a song starts, cars "dance," and "arrows" begin to fall from the top of the screen. The player must press the corresponding key in time and is rewarded with points for it, and a successful series of presses forms a combo.

giovannosaur published the "CarbonRhythm" modification for Need for Speed: Carbon as open source on GitHub. A patch has already been released for it, which fixes sound bugs.

The modification requires:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio
  • DirectX 9 SDK (June 2010)
  • BASS Audio Library
  • MinHook
  • nlohmann/json

NFS: Carbon gameplay with the mod can be viewed at the following link.

Previously, an unofficial RTX remaster of Need for Speed: Carbon was presented online. The racing graphics were improved using path tracing.
