Todd Garner's dissatisfaction was caused by mixed reviews on aggregators: the film holds 73% on Rotten Tomatoes and 48 points on Metacritic.

Todd Garner, producer of the film "Mortal Kombat 2", criticized reviewers who left negative feedback about the picture.

Garner stated that some critics, in his opinion, are completely unfamiliar with the source material and do not understand what fans of the Mortal Kombat franchise expect.

Some of these reviews are just ridiculous. It's obvious that the authors have never played the game and have no idea what fans want and how the Mortal Kombat canon works.

Garner was particularly surprised by the claims about the fantastic elements of the film. According to him, one reviewer was indignant that the film features a character "with a laser eye".

What artist do we even allow people who don't like the genre to review such films?! It's absurd.

Garner later clarified that he is not against negative criticism as such. He is annoyed precisely by reviews from people who initially dislike the basic elements of the Mortal Kombat universe – such as zombies, superpowers, and cybernetic characters.

However, social media users quickly reminded Garner that the films themselves do not always follow the game's canon. One fan noted that the creators invented the character Cole Young, and also changed the backstory of Mileena and Kitana.

Garner did not argue, agreeing with the fair remark.
