Sony Cannot Decide on PlayStation 6 Price and Launch Date
The company is closely monitoring the situation in the component market, especially memory.
Sony is not yet ready to announce the release date and price of the PlayStation 6. This was stated by the company's President and CEO, Hiroki Totoki, during a discussion of the company's financial results for the last quarter.
According to Totoki, Sony is closely monitoring the situation in the component market, especially RAM, the prices of which continue to rise due to a global supply shortage. This factor is currently preventing the company from making a final decision on the launch of the new console.
We have not yet decided when exactly we will release the new console and at what price it will be sold. We need to carefully observe the situation.
The head of the company emphasized that in the 2027 fiscal year, the memory shortage is likely to persist, which means the cost of console production will remain high. Sony has already faced the consequences of rising component prices — the PlayStation 5 previously increased in price by $100 in several regions.
Despite this, Sony assures that a shortage of components for the PS5 in 2026 will be avoided. The company has secured the necessary volumes of materials in advance and partially fixed supply prices.
Sony is also considering various ways to reduce the cost of the future console. According to Totoki, the company is analyzing “various simulations,” including a possible change in the PlayStation 6 business model.
