The creators of "Mortal Kombat 2" continue to hint at where they plan to develop the film franchise next. In an interview with Variety, screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that Liu Kang's story after the events of the second film is far from over.

In the film's finale, the hero dies during a battle with Shao Kahn: he receives a fatal wound, after which he disappears in flames. According to Slater, this was done intentionally – the authors wanted to leave viewers in doubt as to whether the character had truly died or "transitioned to another level of existence."

Fans of the game series surely understand what this is leading to. In the games, Liu Kang, after a series of events, becomes the Fire God and eventually subjugates time, leading to a franchise reboot in Mortal Kombat 1 2023.

However, Liu Kang's transformation into the Fire God may not necessarily happen in the third film. Before that, the hero may face other "adventures," including as a revenant.

Slater has already stated that he has ideas for developing the franchise beyond the third installment – up to the sixth film, although the fate of "Mortal Kombat 3" itself is not yet set in stone.
