15 years later, a modder accidentally found a hidden mode in Metal Gear Solid 2
It turned out that MGS 2 HD Collection had an alternative camera mode all these years.
Interest in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty continues to this day, and Hideo Kojima's project continues to surprise fans. Recently, a modder revealed how he accidentally uncovered one of the game's secrets.
According to Afevis Solmunko, the MGS 2 HD Collection (2011) version has had a full third-person camera all these years, which works normally and allows for a new gameplay experience. To activate the mode, it is enough to change just one variable in the game's code.
The modder suggests that it might be possible to create a patch for emulators or even hacked consoles:
In narrow corridors, the camera is fixed from above to avoid clipping through walls, but otherwise… yes, it has been in the game for 15 years.
It is assumed that this is not a “secret” of Hideo Kojima, but simply a legacy of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection development by Bluepoint Games (code/work-in-progress remained). The modder noted: “Everything related to this is marked as "BP/Bluepoint".”
Afevis Solmunko has published several gameplay recordings with this “secret camera mode” in Metal Gear Solid 2, which can be viewed at the following link.
Currently, this and many other games in the franchise are available on modern consoles and PCs. For example, METAL GEAR SOLID 2: Sons of Liberty - Master Collection Version is available.
