Some individuals decided to boast about downloading a "free" version of the game from other resources.

On May 14, Subnautica 2 was released in "early access" format. However, shortly before this date, an early build of the game was leaked online. Unknown Worlds Entertainment subsequently confirmed the leak.

Some pirates not only downloaded the "free trial version" of the game but also actively boasted about it in the official Subnautica Discord* channel.

Developer Anthony Gallegos spoke out on the topic of piracy — he is calm about the phenomenon itself, but he was outraged by such arrogance from pirate gamers:

Just to be clear: pirates are going to pirate. We were all kids once. Money and economy — there are difficult situations, I understand. What annoyed me was not piracy itself, but people who brazenly came [to our Discord channel] and rubbed [the fact of piracy] in the faces of those who were waiting for a chance to play legally. That's what infuriated me.

Anthony also mentioned users who spread false information about him — in reality, the developer is not a millionaire and rents his home:

And there are also responses on the Reddit forum where they continue to talk as if I'm a millionaire. However, that's not the case at all. I don't own my home; I rent it. There's a lot of misinformation being spread right now, and we just wanted to ensure the best possible release for our players.

Ultimately, Subnautica 2 still had a successful launch, and the developers have already sold a couple of million copies.
