In late May, CD Projekt RED announced an expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled Songs of the Past. The announcement attracted attention not only from regular gamers but also from some industry representatives.

For example, Mark Noseworthy, the former head of Bungie, known for Destiny and Marathon, decided to comment on social media. He considers the expansion announcement an "excellent idea."

Commenting on CD Projekt RED's decision, the developer noted that the expansion will not only help bring back old players but also expand the potential audience for the new installment — some players were too young when the original version of The Witcher 3 was released:

This is a great idea on several levels. 1.) Gamers start discussing the "The Witcher" brand again, and this helps expand the audience for The Witcher 4. Half a generation of current players weren't old enough when the third installment came out. 2.) They introduced a partner development studio [Fool's Theory] that will be able to contribute to The Witcher 4 — now they will have a reputation.

The release of the Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is expected next year, and CD Projekt RED plans to share more details this summer.
