Factorio was released in early access in 2016. Wube Software has been developing its project for many years and introduced the Space Age expansion for the factory building simulator. The DLC allowed players to continue their journey after launching rockets into space, offering the opportunity to explore new worlds with unique challenges.

However, active gameplay development is gradually coming to an end. The developers recently discussed update 2.1. Over the next few weeks, they plan to conduct closed beta testing, and if all goes well, the game's creators "hope" to release Factorio 2.1 in an "experimental" format by the end of June.

They want to keep the update in Experimental status all summer:

Experimental means that the update will be publicly available, but you will need to manually opt-in or download the experimental version separately from our website. After release, we will, as usual, focus on bug fixes before our summer holidays begin in July. It is important to note that we plan to keep version 2.1 in experimental status all summer (i.e., not move it to stable) to give mod authors enough time to update.

Factorio developers stated that they consider version 2.1 to be the "final major update" and intend to shift their focus to long-term support:

This includes bug fixes, platform and compatibility support, modding capability development, etc. Otherwise, we believe we have reached a good point to conclude active gameplay development.

Factorio 2.1 update will not feature new enemies, planets, etc. The developers will offer various fixes and "quality of life improvements."
