Robert Downey Jr., who returned to the MCU as Victor von Doom, admitted that the film "Avengers: Doctor Doom" will not be able to surpass "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Endgame." At a special screening of "Infinity War" at SXSW 2026, the actor noted that these films set an almost insurmountable benchmark that is difficult to build upon.
"What we're working on now, long and hard... we can't surpass it. We can't stand on the shoulders of those titans in the form of 'Infinity War' and 'Endgame.' So we're literally resetting everything and we're going to earn your trust and respect from the very beginning. With a team like the Russo brothers, I think we have an excellent chance."

Confirming the actor's words, Joe Russo noted that "Avengers: Doctor Doom" is being created as a standalone project: "We are starting everything from scratch. We want everyone to understand that the film does not rely on the past."
The premiere of "Avengers: Doctor Doom" is scheduled for December 18, 2026.
