Not even breaking even: Marathon is far from profitability and Bungie may face new layoffs - rumor
Official sales figures for the game are not yet known.
During a recent episode of the Insider Gaming podcast, journalist and insider Tom Henderson stated that Bungie is struggling to recoup the funds invested in the creation of Marathon. Although the exact budget of the project is unknown to him, the insider noted that, in his opinion, the game is still far from breaking even.
Furthermore, the insider warned of potential consequences for the studio itself. According to him, if Marathon's financial performance does not improve, Bungie could face another wave of layoffs. He also suggested that the revenue from the current project might not be enough to sustain a studio of this size until the release of its next major game.
Official sales data from Sony and Bungie are not disclosed, but back in March, it was reported that the project sold approximately 1.2 million copies in less than a month after its release. While such a result might be considered successful for many games, for a high-cost live-service project of this scale, it likely fell short of expectations.
