State of Decay 3 Details Revealed - Co-op, Huge Map, and New Zombies
At Xbox Games Showcase 2026, Undead Labs studio for the first time showed full gameplay of State of Decay 3 and revealed key details of the project. The release is scheduled for 2027, and some players are already participating in alpha testing.
The developers confirmed that all trailer footage was recorded directly from the game without CGI. Thanks to Unreal Engine 5, the creators promise the best visual level and animations in the series' history.
Players can expect a large open world, settlement building, community development of survivors, and four-player co-op. One of the main innovations will be Plague Nests, an evolution of infected nests from the previous installment. They will develop independently, spread infection, and react differently to players' actions.
The world will continue to live without user intervention. If threats are ignored, zombies will be able to capture new territories and attack survivor bases.
The combat system has also been seriously reworked. There will be fast and powerful attacks, improved dodges, crowd control of enemies, and a more important role for special types of infected. Different types of zombies will require different approaches in combat.
The map will be approximately four times larger than one location from State of Decay 2 and will be fully open from the start. Co-op will offer a shared world where players can jointly develop bases, advance the plot, and influence the state of the world even without simultaneous online presence.
Survivor enclaves, alliance and recruitment systems will also return. Developers will expand the crafting of makeshift weapons, and exploring dangerous zones will remain the main source of valuable resources.
