The developers are preparing a major technical update.

Currently, Starbreeze Studios is developing Payday 3, while support for the second installment has been handed over to modder-developers from Sidetrack Games. They recently announced a major technical update.

Payday 2 will receive an upgrade to the Diesel 3.0 engine, with the following improvements announced (these are just some of the developers' plans):

  • Transition to 64-bit version
  • Rendering update from DX9 to DirectX 11
  • Reduced file size to approximately 32 GB
  • Faster loading on SSDs
  • 6-character lobby codes

Sidetrack Games will conduct an open beta test for the Payday 2 engine update:

With any major changes, some bugs are inevitable, so we will conduct an open beta test from June 30 until the end of July. This will give us time to fix any potential issues and allow modders to update their modifications. More detailed information about the beta test will be published on June 30.

The developers have so far limited themselves to a small video announcement and a post in the Payday 2 community on Steam. A detailed list of planned changes and a comparison of loading speed/performance have not been published.
