Gears of War Adaptation to Tell the Origin Story of Delta Squad
Entertainment Weekly revealed the first details of Netflix's Gears of War movie.
Entertainment Weekly, in an exclusive interview with the Xbox team, revealed the first details of Netflix's full-length Gears of War adaptation. According to the official synopsis, the film "will tell the origin story of Delta Squad – a motley crew of soldiers forced to wage a desperate war for survival against the Locust, a race of subterranean creatures bent on annihilating humanity."
Xbox President of Content Matt Booty emphasized that the squad's formation story is ideally suited for a film adaptation, as it allows for the exploration of the source material's main theme:
"This story, at its core, is about brotherhood and the bonds between soldiers. When you visit the developer studio [The Coalition], you see their main slogan: 'Never fight alone.' For building a strong dramatic storyline in cinema, this is an excellent starting point."
The film's screenplay is being written by Jon Spaihts, an Oscar nominee for the screenplays of both parts of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune." David Leitch, known for "Deadpool 2," "Bullet Train," and "The Fall Guy," will direct. Netflix has not yet revealed the start dates for filming or the cast.
At the same time, EW confirmed that an animated Gears of War series is still in development for Netflix, although little new information about it has emerged since its announcement in 2022.
