Up to 80% of AAA Game Launch Sales Come from PlayStation - Journalist
According to Christopher Dring, editor-in-chief of The Game Business, up to 75-80% of global AAA game launch sales on consoles come from PlayStation.
Christopher Dring, editor-in-chief and co-founder of The Game Business, stated that the majority of launch sales for single-player AAA games come from PlayStation.
He reported on social media:
A new AAA console game on average gets about 75%-80% of its sales (at launch) on PlayStation compared to Xbox. This number is lower when it comes to online multiplayer games.
The comment appeared amidst discussions after reports indicated that Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders on PlayStation 5 significantly outpaced Xbox Series X|S.
In response to questions about the methodology, Dring clarified that he was referring specifically to sales, not player count:
I used the word “sales” not “players”. This is based on pretty much all the data sources available to me… I averaged the numbers. Sony games don’t come to Xbox.
When asked if the estimate only applied to specific regions, he replied: “Globally.” To criticism about the lack of open sources, Dring stated: “I am the source.”
According to him, the estimate is based on data from several industry providers and reflects a global average for AAA games at launch.
