PlayStation 6 Price Tag Could Be Significantly Higher Than Expected - Sony Hints at Abandoning Subsidies

Sony's upcoming console could become one of the most expensive in the brand's history. The reason cited is the rapid increase in the cost of components, including RAM and SSD drives, due to which the production cost of the PlayStation 6, according to industry sources, is already approaching the $1000 mark.

Sony itself provided additional grounds for discussion. During a recent Q&A session with investors, company representatives stated that they do not consider it realistic to fully offset the rising component costs with their own funds. Moreover, Sony emphasized that it does not intend to adhere to a strategy of selling hardware at significant losses, as has often happened with the launch of previous console generations.

The company noted that it has already been forced to raise prices for some devices outside Japan, but this has not yet had a noticeable impact on demand. At the same time, Sony continues to analyze the market situation and strives to convince buyers that the cost of devices corresponds to the value offered.

Interestingly, in its commentary, Sony specifically mentioned the PlayStation Portal handheld device. This may indicate that the company is considering alternative ways to attract users to the new generation ecosystem, without relying solely on aggressive subsidization of the PlayStation 6.

If current forecasts are confirmed, the price of the PlayStation 6 could exceed the psychologically important $1000 mark. Such a scenario could make the new console less accessible to a mass audience, especially against the backdrop of the overall increase in electronics prices caused by rising costs for modern components and high demand for artificial intelligence system hardware.
