The director wanted to show an ordinary person in the world of Resident Evil.

The director and screenwriter of the upcoming Resident Evil film franchise reboot, Zack Cregger ("The Rehearsal"), in an interview with Empire magazine, once again spoke about the concept of the film and his vision for the main character – the courier Brian, played by Austin Abrams ("The Rehearsal"). Cregger compared his journey to that of Frodo Baggins from "The Lord of the Rings":

"The concept is that we're following an idiot. Not in the sense that he's stupid, but he's just not a typical game character – he has no combat skills whatsoever and is completely unprepared for survival. Brian is the most ordinary person, who suddenly has a 'sacred mission' thrust upon him, leading him into hell itself. It's like Frodo going to Mordor."

This is not the first time the director has called his character an "idiot." He previously stated that he was not interested in retelling the original story and wanted to show what would happen if an ordinary person entered Umbrella's zombie apocalypse world.

At the same time, Cregger emphasizes that the film's dynamic is directly inspired by the gameplay structure of Capcom games:

"The whole movie feels like one giant action scene. Everything explodes by the fifth minute and continues at that pace until the very end. What I like about the games is how you constantly move from one location to another, and each one presents a unique challenge. I'm directly borrowing that rhythm, where the hero literally runs through a never-ending obstacle course."

In addition to Austin Abrams, the cast includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Jonno Wilson. The Resident Evil reboot is scheduled to premiere on September 18, 2026.
