Square Enix announced re-releases of Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II for Switch 2 without an upgrade path for original owners and without save transfer.
Square Enix announced Octopath Traveler Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Octopath Traveler II Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Instead of joy, many players met the news with criticism. The reason is that the company does not plan to release a separate update for owners of the original versions.
The new editions offer higher resolution and smoother animation on Nintendo Switch 2 without changes to the plot or additional mechanics. However, Square Enix decided not to add a paid or free upgrade path.
At the end of the trailer, the company stated: "there are no plans to sell an upgrade package that allows upgrading from the Nintendo Switch version to Nintendo Switch 2."
Also, there will be no save compatibility between the two versions. Players who buy the improved edition again will have to start their playthrough from scratch.
Fans compare Square Enix's decision to recent criticism of Sony. Players believe that it would be more reasonable to offer an inexpensive update or a free upgrade for graphical improvements. Especially considering that the company previously used other approaches: Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy Tactics received free updates, and Romancing SaGa 2 offered a paid upgrade for $10.
