DOOM Creator Criticizes Microsoft
Microsoft laid off 136 out of 185 id Software employees, and an anonymous developer from the studio accused the company of destroying value built over years.
The gaming industry is experiencing a new crisis, and Microsoft has found itself in the spotlight. Last week, id Software, the studio behind the DOOM series, was hit by massive layoffs.
The layoffs occurred a day before the release of the Revelation expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages, which received high critical acclaim. The team didn't even get to find out if the project was a commercial success.
The scale of the layoffs was enormous: according to online reports, 136 out of 185 employees left the studio. The decision provoked a strong reaction from former employees.
An anonymous developer stated:
There are no benefits to being an Xbox studio.
According to him, Microsoft is destroying the value that the team had built over years, without understanding the consequences of its decisions.
A year after the release of DOOM: The Dark Ages, the studio was significantly downsized.
