Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was repeatedly criticized for its "flat" lighting after its release on PlayStation 5. In 2025, Square Enix released the game on PC, and since then, modders have been working on their own improvements. Recently, David Matos presented a new version of the Shader Injector 2.0 modification, which reworks lighting, shadows, reflections, and water, making the project, in some places, resemble a full-fledged remaster.

Shader Injector intercepts DirectX 12 graphics commands and, during gameplay, replaces the original shaders responsible for rendering light, shadows, materials, and other effects. Version 2.0 adds separate improvements for interiors and open locations: characters and surrounding objects now cast more noticeable contact and micro-shadows, and updated reflections eliminate some light artifacts. The mod also allows adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation, and automatic exposure adaptation.

Matos paid special attention to water. The new shader adds more detailed waves, underwater light patterns, a sense of depth, and improved reflections. Currently, the technology does not work in all locations: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth uses several methods for rendering water, and the author plans to gradually add support for the remaining options.

Shader Injector 2.0 also offers experimental global illumination and additional ambient occlusion effects. These make scenes more volumetric but are disabled by default because they significantly impact performance, and the lack of proper filtering can create visual noise. In future versions, Matos plans to improve their quality and optimization.

The update also simplified installation — now the necessary shaders are automatically detected regardless of the graphics card, driver, and game version. Compatibility with Async Mod, which helps reduce stuttering during shader compilation, has also improved.

Shader Injector 2.0 can be downloaded for free via Nexus Mods and GitHub. The modification is intended for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth versions from Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store.
