Bethesda Game Studios recently announced several projects for the Fallout franchise. It confirmed cooperation with Obsidian Entertainment – the studio will make a new game, but no details have been revealed yet.

Insider and Windows Central journalist Jez Corden commented on this announcement. According to his sources, a prototype of the new project has been developed at Obsidian for two years; the studio was counting on cooperation with Bethesda Game Studios.

It is not yet clear which engine will be used to develop the new Fallout:

Sources noted that this project [Obsidian] (which was not officially called Fallout) was very close in spirit to the Fallout franchise – so much so that at the Xbox Game Studios leadership level, discussions were held about whether to make it on the Unreal Engine or the Creation Engine.

Corden's informants said that Obsidian's previous project "was not formally Fallout, partly because Todd Howard wanted to be involved in any potential official Obsidian and Bethesda collaboration on the franchise."

According to his data, such cooperation was impossible at that time due to obligations related to the Fallout series, The Elder Scrolls VI, and Starfield.

It seems that the degree of "closeness to Fallout" of this post-apocalyptic project largely depends on the observers' point of view, but Obsidian is obviously well aware of the long-standing expectations of fans to see their return to this genre.
