Recently, Microsoft (Xbox) had a new round of layoffs. Fans of the free-to-play CCG Hearthstone noticed that against this backdrop, the project's game director announced his departure.
Tyler Bielman published a statement:
"Retired." But what does that actually mean? I think the "retired" part is clear to me. It means I've left Blizzard after three incredible years, and I don't have any full-time work on the horizon yet. It means I'll have more time for my health, relationships with loved ones, and projects I'm truly passionate about.
Tyler clarified that his decision was personal — it was not related to the ongoing layoffs:
To be clear: my decision was entirely independent of any larger processes at Microsoft or Blizzard. The timing is not ideal – I understand that this is a difficult period for the industry, and I sincerely sympathize with everyone affected. Too many people to thank each one personally, because there are indeed SO many. If you're reading this, you're probably one of them – so thank you.
Some Hearthstone fans, during the discussion, admitted that they are awaiting the announcement of a new game director for the project with "cautious optimism" — not everyone liked the current direction of the game's development.
