He-Man Goes Home: "Masters of the Universe" Digital Release on July 22
After a disappointing theatrical run, Amazon hopes to attract an audience on its own streaming service.
The film "Masters of the Universe" will be available to Prime Video subscribers on July 22 – 47 days after its theatrical premiere.
The He-Man adaptation approached its digital release with disappointing box office results. The film earned $64.7 million in North America and $48.7 million in international markets. Total gross was approximately $113.5 million against a production budget that various sources estimate at $170-200 million, excluding marketing costs.
After the opening weekend, Amazon MGM's head of domestic distribution, Kevin Wilson, called the result a "very solid start." According to him, the studio evaluates the film as part of a broader distribution strategy that includes attracting audiences after the theatrical run concludes:
"This start was that important first step that validates the effectiveness of our comprehensive distribution strategy – building awareness and engagement that will last far beyond the theatrical window."
"Masters of the Universe" tells the story of Prince Adam's return to Eternia 15 years after being separated from his homeland. The protagonist teams up with Teela and Duncan to confront Skeletor and embrace his destiny as He-Man. The film was directed by Travis Knight, known for "Bumblebee." The main roles were played by Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, and Jared Leto.
