Sony introduced unprecedentedly strict social media communication rules after deciding to abandon physical discs
This was revealed by former Santa Monica Studio employee Alana Pearce.
After Sony announced the cessation of physical game disc production from 2028, the company reportedly significantly tightened internal rules for employee communication on social media.
According to Pearce, Sony management understood in advance that the news would provoke a negative reaction from the community. Despite the company's activity on social media after the announcement, Sony has not yet publicly commented on the controversy surrounding the abandonment of physical media.
In a recent YouTube video, Pearce stated that she received information from employees of internal PlayStation studios. According to them, after the announcement of the policy regarding physical discs, Sony distributed the strictest guidelines for public statements in the company's history.
PlayStation studio employees told me that Sony issued the strictest social media communication rules they had ever seen. The company regularly gives employees instructions on what can and cannot be said on certain issues. When I was working on God of War: Laufey, I also received similar instructions, including on the day the game was announced. But this time, according to the people I spoke with, the restrictions were the toughest they had ever seen.
She also believes that such strict measures indicate that Sony anticipated a large-scale reputational crisis in advance. According to Pearce, the company's management perfectly understood how ambiguously the gaming community would perceive the abandonment of physical copies of games, and therefore tried to limit public comments from employees on this topic as much as possible.
Currently, Sony has not officially commented on the statements of the former Santa Monica Studio employee and has not disclosed details of internal recommendations for employees.
