Composer reveals the secret behind the soundtrack for "Spider-Man: A New Day"
Michael Giacchino found an unusual way to reflect the changes that Peter Parker underwent.
Composer Michael Giacchino revealed how he changed Peter Parker's musical theme for the film "Spider-Man: A New Day." During the "Musical Anatomy of a Superhero" panel at Comic-Con in San Diego, the author admitted that before working on the fourth Spider-Man film with Tom Holland, he wasn't sure if he could offer anything new again.
"I thought, 'Wow, I've never done four parts of anything before.' I didn't know what else I could bring to it. Then I had an idea, and I asked Destin [Daniel Cretton]: 'What if we start removing all the extra notes from the theme, as if things and people Peter no longer has are disappearing from his life?'"
Thus, the familiar musical theme of Spider-Man gradually lost its pomp and returned to its essence. According to Giacchino, the updated version should convey Peter's emotional state after the finale of "No Way Home":
"I wanted to make a sad Spider-Man movie. Everyone wants to see a sad Spider-Man because we're sad ourselves, and now we can be sad together. I was curious if the theme would retain its power after such changes, because now only its core remains. After listening to the result, I thought, 'Maybe I should have done this three movies ago.' But we learn from our mistakes."
In the finale of the previous film, "Spider-Man: No Way Home," Doctor Strange's spell made the entire world forget Peter Parker's identity. Four years later, the hero lives alone and dedicates himself entirely to fighting crime, while his former friends continue to move on without him. The growing pressure triggers dangerous changes in Peter's body, which may be the only way to stop a new invisible enemy.
The premiere of "Spider-Man: A New Day" is scheduled for July 31, 2026. Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon will return to their roles. Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and Michael Mando will also appear in the film.
